Diplomats and dignitaries from around the world have celebrated the life of Kofi Annan.

Two thousand guests were invited to his state funeral in Ghana.

He was the United Nations secretary-general for almost 10 years - the first black African UN chief - and was a Nobel Peace Prize winner, as well. Although his time guiding the UN was far from smooth, his tenure oversaw UN failures to stop genocides in Rwanda and Srebrenica, Bosnia, Annan is credited with

Human rights reforms and improvements in the struggle to contain HIV/Aids in Africa.

He passed away last month at the age of 80.
